Gordon Turns 18 (Updated)

Gordon Horace Chin (centre of picture) turns 18 today. Well, almost. His actual birthday is on March 30, same birthday as Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Hj Aman. But as he would be leaving for Kuala Lumpur on Sunday for further studies, his family decided to hold a birthday cum farewell party for him earlier.

Gordon, who did his Form 5 at the private Seri Insan Secondary School in Kota Kinabalu last year, will be doing A-level Law at the Brickfields Asia College (many Sabahans did their law studies there too) with a view to pursuing a law degree later.

Apart from those from Seri Insan and his former school Sabah College, his friends from the Life Teen group of the Sacred Heart Cathedral also turned up.

Congratulations for passing the SPM,Gordon, and Happy Birthday!

Raja Dr Nazrin Shah's advice

Like this one and just got to share it with you. Read this from the Bernama web site just a while ago.

Adressing His Royal Highness' subjects at the Perak state-level Maulidur Rasul (Birthday of Prophet Mohamad) celebration in Ipoh this morning, the Regent of Perak, Raja Dr Nazrin Shah Sultan Azlan Shah (picure) advised the country's leaders to refer to the records of world history to learn from the causes of the fall of many empires and governments, and even monarchs and national leaders.

He said there was historical evidence that many people were given the opportunity to become leaders but only a handful of individuals rose to be successful leaders who charted history and built civilisations.

"This happened because many of those given the opportunity to lead allowed the joy and passion of having power to lead them astray.

"Some among them became complacent, some went astray, some were ill-advised, some adopted wrong decisions and some made miscalculations.

"Such are the historical accounts available on leaders and leadership which the ummah (people) of today should use as the basis of reference so as not to repeat the mistakes," he said.

Although he was speaking at an Islamic religious celebration, the acting Sultan of Perak (one of the 13 States of Malaysia) was also speaking in the aftermath of the just-concluded 12th General Election of Malaysia.

His Royal Highness was obviously referring to the ruling BN coalition's worst showing since the 1969 Malaysian election in which the UMNO-led BN (then Alliance) also lost its two-thirds majority in Parliament and which ended with racial riots and declaration of emergency.

To add insult to injury, the BN also lost power in four States (including Raja Dr Nazrin's Perak) and failed to wrest back Kelantan from the Opposition. For the first time since Independence, Perak, just like Kedah and Selangor, is ruled by a non-BN component party. The 4th State, Penang (or Pulau Pinang in the Malay language) was won by then opposition party Gerakan in 1969. But Gerakan joined BN before the 1974 election. History repeated itself 29 years later when Gerakan was ousted by the DAP-led opposition on March 8, 2008.

Perak's new Menteri Besar (Chief Minister) is from the fundamentalist Pan-Malaysian Islamic Party (PAS) while his coalition government's partners are from the multi-racial Keadilan (Justice) party and the Chinese-based Democratic Action Party (DAP).

My Say:

Yes, I cannot agree with Raja Dr Nazrin more. From my observations since I started working at the tender age of 19 in 1973, man's memory is short and sometimes people never seem to learn!

When I first started working, it was still the Usno-led Sabah Alliance government which had ruled Sabah since Independence in 1963. In 1976, the Alliance lost to the Berjaya party which was then only 9 months old. What led Usno to believe that they would win the election was probably due to the fact that the party had earlier defeated the then infant Berjaya in two by-elections in State Assembly seats. Also, party leaders and government officials reported to the then Usno president Tun Mustapha only what he liked to hear, i.e. "No problem Tun, we are going to win."

In other words, the 'Yes Boss' syndrome. But to be fair to the officials, nobody at that time would expect the Alliance to lose. After all, it 'won' ALL of the 32 State Assembly seats in the previous election in 1971, uncontested! Moral of the story: Don't be complacent, as Raja Dr Nazrin pointed out today.

I once served a Berjaya politician who was a former university lecturer in history and who therefore was fond of saying "History always repeats itself". Thus, in 1985 history really repeated itself when Parti Berjaya itself also lost to an infant party, PBS. Infact, the Kadazan-dominated and Christian-led PBS broke Berjaya's record in that it was less than two months old when it won the election!

Just like the good old Usno days, nobody in Berjaya would believe that it would lose to an infant party. After all, in the previous election in 1981, Berjaya swept 44 of the 48 seats! Also, just like Usno time, officials reported to Berjaya president and Chief Minister Datuk Harris only what he liked to hear: "No problem, Datuk, we can win". Moral of the story: Don't be complacent, says Raja Dr Nazrin.

History repeated itself one more time in Sabah in 1994 when the PBS won narrowly with a simple majority. Due to this narrow win, the PBS state government collapsed less than two months later when 3 of its Assemblymen (including one Nominated) switched camp and joined BN through UMNO. The 3 were followed by a few others within days. PBS president and Chief Minister Datuk Pairin had no choice but to resign, paving the way for a new UMNO-led BN Sabah government. Moral of the story: Don't be complacent, according to Raja Dr Nazrin.

So Alliance, Berjaya and PBS all managed to rule Sabah for only 9 years each. But BN managed to break the zinx, having ruled the State since 1994, meaning 14 years already. Infact, despite BN's poor showing at the federal or parliament level and 5 states, the Sabah BN did well in the recent election, losing only 1 parliament and 1 state seat.

May be this is God's will, or may be because BN has governed the State well, or may be Chief Minister Datuk Musa is an excellent leader in view of his corporate background, or may be the 'wind of change' in the Peninsular failed to cross the South China Sea and couldn't land in Sabah. Whatever it is, let's hope that Sabah BN will learn from history especially in the wake of the recent election results elsewhere in the nation.

By the way, Raja Dr Nazrin is my favourite among the Rulers in Malaysia and I believe he is the most popular too among Malaysians especially the younger generation and educated. He is not only handsome, soft-spoken and not arrogant, but among the most educated as well, being equipped with a Phd. Until his marriage last year, the Harvard-trained heir to the Perak throne was the most eligible bachelor in Malaysia too.

Conclusion: Man's memory is short and this is especially true when one reaches 54 like me. I have a pharmacist friend. Went to see him. Told him about my problem. He gave me Gingko Bibloba.Only time will tell if it works. Till then, let's learn from history, as Raja Dr Nazrin advised.

Anifah Aman springs a surprise!

One of the 4 Members of Parliament (MPs) from Sabah who were appointed as Deputy Ministers by the Prime Minister yesterday - Datuk Anifah Aman - sprang a surprise when he issued a statement last night saying that he was declining the offer.

Anifah who recently was re-elected to the Kimanis parliamentary seat said he had served two terms as Deputy Minister and wanted to make way for a younger person.

The brother of the Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Musa Aman was first elected an MP in Beaufort on a BN (UMNO) ticket in 1999. He was immediately made a Deputy Minister in the Federal Government. In the 2004 election, he moved to the newly-created seat of Kimanis and won. He was re-appointed Deputy Minister.

Meanwhile, Musa said today that he was leaving it to the Prime Minister to appoint another MP (not necessarily from Sabah now) to replace Anifah. If Anifah's place is indeed taken over by a non-Sabahan, then it is a loss for us as the number of our Deputy Ministers will then be reduced to 3. Also because Anifah was to have been Deputy Transport Minister, an important portfolio especially as Sabah is trying to attract more tourists through a better transportation system.

By the way, Anifah was not the only MP to have declined the offer. He had a 'friend' in Tunku Azlan Sultan Abu Bakar, the MP from Pahang who also turned down a Deputy Minister's post. Just like Anifah, he too had served more than two terms. Tunku Azlan is a member of the Pahang royal household.

One is brother of the Sabah Chief Minister. One is brother of the Sultan of Pahang. What a co-incidence!

Long Weekend for Sabahans & Sarawakians

It will be a long weekend for Sabahans and Sarawakians beginning tomorrow, Thursday, March 20, 2008 especially for the civil servants.

This is because both Thursday and Friday are public holidays. Tomorrow is Maulidur Rasul or Prophet Mohamad's birthday, an important day for Muslims worldwide. March 21 is Good Friday when Christians remember Christ's death. However, Good Friday is a public holiday only in Sabah and Sarawak and not other parts of Malaysia.

Saturday is already an off-day for civil servants. However, it is not a public holiday, meaning it's a working day for those in the private sector except those in companies with 5-day working week. Even so, those eligible are expected to go on leave in order to have a longer weekend with their families.

"The 4-day break is good for domestic tourism. Many families are expected to head for popular local tourist spots such as the Kinabalu Park including the Poring Hotsprings and the islands off Kota Kinabalu in Sabah and the Mulu Caves and other hot spots in Sarawak," remarked an in-bound tour operator.

"The long break will also enable workers to go back to their hometowns or villages. Still, the more adventurous may even drive across the border between Sabah, Sarawak and Brunei," said a civil servant.

However, most Christians especially Catholics are expected to be going to Church as this is Holy Week which culminates with Easter Sunday when Christian celebrate Christ's rising from the dead.

"The long weekend is also a welcome break for those involved in the just-concluded election especially civil servants, party workers and the winning candidates appointed to government posts," remarked an observer.

Sabah Gets 2 Extra Deputy Ministers

In the new line-up of the post-election Malaysian Cabinet announced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdulah Ahmad Badawi today, Sabah now has a better representation as expected. Sabah maintained its quota of three full Federal Cabinet Ministers but saw its Deputy Ministers increased from two to four. This is the best representation Sabah has ever had in the Federal Government since Independence in 1963.

The 3 Ministers retained were UPKO president Tan Sri Bernard Dompok (picture), PBS deputy president Datuk Dr Maximus Ongkili and Sabah UMNO deputy liaison chief Datuk Shafie Abdal.

Dompok, a former Sabah Chief Minister, continues to be Minister in the Prime Minister's Department. Ongkili, who held a similar post prior to the election, is now Minister for Science, Technology and Innovation. Shafie, the former Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Minister, has been transferred to the enlarged Ministry of National Unity, Culture, Arts and Heritage.

The only Sabahan deputy minister (roughly equivalent to a Sabah Minister) in the former Federal Cabinet retained is Datuk Anifah Aman, brother of Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Aman. He has however been moved from the Plantation Industries and Commodities Ministry to the Ministry of Transport. The other, former Housing & Local Government deputy minister Datuk Hajah Azizah Dun, did not defend her parliamentary seat of Beaufort. She instead contested the State seat of Klias which she won and is now a member of the Sabah Cabinet.

The three new faces from Sabah are PBRS president Tan Sri Joseph Kurup, LDP president Datuk VK Liew and UMNO MP for Kalabakan, Datuk Ghapur Salleh. Kurup who is a first-time MP after winning Pensiangan uncontested is now Deputy Minister of Rural and Regional Development. Liew, also a first-timer after wrestling Sandakan back from the Opposition, has been made Deputy Minister of International Trade and Industry. Ghapur, a former Sabah Deputy Chief Minister, is now Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and Environment.

Prior to the election, Sabah also had a Parliamentary Secretary (roughly equivalent to the State's Assistant Minister) in the person of Datuk Shamsu Baharum but he was not chosen to defend his Silam seat. Furthermore, in forming the new Federal Cabinet today the Prime Minister has done away with the post of Parliamentary Secretary. This means that a Federal Minister will only have a Deputy Minister to assist him or her and therefore both of them will have to work harder.

Congratulations to the 7 Sabah MPs appointed to the Federal Government. For those not appointed, be patient, your turn will come.

Dawn of A New Era for Penang

Today, Tuesday, 11th March 2008 is an historic day for the State of Penang (known as Pulau Pinang in the Malay language which means Penang Island), one of the 13 States of Malaysia.

It is the dawn of a new era for the State named after the pinang tree which is featured in both its state flag and emblem and which is located in mainland Peninsular Malaysia.

On this day Mr Lim Guan Eng, 48, secretary-general of the Democratic Action Party (DAP) was sworn-in (picture) as the State's 4th Chief Minister before Penang Yang Di-Pertua Negeri (Governor), Tun Abdul Rahman Abbas. His appointment capped a 22-year political career which started when he was only 26 years old when he was elected a Member of the Malaysian Parliament (MP) and all of which (until today) was spent being in the Opposition. For someone who spent more than a year in jail and who was barred from contesting in an election for almost a decade, this appointment is perhaps something which he himself never dreamnt of! After all, throughout the campaign period his aim was only to provide the Penang State Legislative Assembly with a strong Opposition by denying the ruling party a two-thirds majority!

'Historic' because Lim's DAP not only defeated the Gerakan party-led Barisan Nasional (National Front) in the 12th Malaysian General Election held on 8th March 2008 beyond its own expectation, but wiped out Gerakan in the process. 'Dawn of a New Era' because Gerakan had been at the forefront of the Penang government since 1969.

That year, Gerakan led by Dr Lim Chong Eu defeated the Malaysian Chinese Association-led (MCA) Alliance Government which included United Malay National Organisation (UMNO), and Malaysian Indian Congress (MIC). Ironically, Dr Lim (now Tun, Malaysian's highest civilian title awarded by the King) is a former MCA president himself before he founded Gerakan.

Dr Lim took over from the late Tan Sri Wong Pau Nee to become Penang's 2nd Chief Minister. Wong was Chief Minister from 1957, the year Malaya (the predecessor of Malaysia) gained independence from Britain. However, Gerakan joined the BN (the successor of Alliance) just before the 1974 election after tasting 5 years of being in the 'Opposition' at the federal level as the central government was controlled by the then Alliance. Thus, it had been a Gerakan-led BN state government in Penang since 1974 until its shocking defeat by DAP last Saturday.

However, Dr Lim was unexpectedly defeated by DAP advisor Mr Lim Kit Siang, Guan Eng's father and then DAP secretary-general in 1990. But DAP did not then win enough seats to form the state government. Taking over from Dr Lim as Penang's 3rd Chief Minister was Tan Sri Dr Koh Tsu Koon, the former's political secretary and protege. Dr Koh remained Chief Minister until Gerakan was wiped out over the weekend. Among his greatest political achievements since 1990, apart from leading the Penang BN into 3 consecutive election victories in 1995, 1999 and 2004, was when he personally defeated Lim Kit Siang who tried to 'finish him off' in 1995 the way he did to Dr Lim Chong Eu, thus obtaining a sweet revenge of sorts on behalf of his former boss.

Thus, Gerakan's humiliaiting defeat on March 8 was reminiscent of what happened in 1969 when the party uprooted MCA. "It took almost 30 years, but the Penangnites (mostly Chinese) finally said 'enough is enough'. Last Saturday, Guan Eng finished off what his father could not in 1990 and 1995. This reminds us of US President Bush finishing what his father could not with Saddam Hussein and Irag in the early 1990s," commented an observer.

Dr Koh, who had been an MP representing Penang in the Malaysian Parliament prior to his being a Penang State Assemblyman throughout the period he was Chief Minister, contested a parliamentary instead of state seat last Saturday to enable him to join the Federal Cabinet in order to be in the mainstream of national politics now that he heads a component party of the BN. He has been acting Gerakan president, taking over from Dr Lim Kean Yick , a long-serving Malaysian Minister who last year handed over the helm to the former. But just like his mentor, Dr Koh and most of his party candidates too suffered humiliating defeat over the weekend, thus dashing his hopes of becoming a Federal Minister. Also dashed were the hopes of the 3 Penang Gerakan leaders short-listed to replace Koh as Chief Minister.

Will history repeat itself 5 years (the length of a Malaysian parliamentary term) from now? Ten years? 15 years? That depends on the performance of the DAP-led new Penang Government. In the meantime, congratulations!
